My Proverbs 31 Checklist

As I read through Proverbs 31 tonight, I realized I have a long ways to go! Here is a breakdown of Proverbs 31 and how I stack up! My comments are in the parenthesis! (Just in case you can't tell!!! I don't want you taking my thoughts as gospel!)

Proverbs 31

10 An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels.

11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, And he will have no lack of gain. (I don't know about the lack of gain part, but my hubby trusts me!)

12 She does him good and not evil All the days of her life. (I certainly am working hard at doing my hubby good and not evil)

13 She looks for wool and flax (I look for just about everything, especially my keys! I probably have wool and flax around here somewhere, it's just a matter of finding it!) And works with her hands in delight.

14 She is like merchant ships; She brings her food from afar. (I'm not sure that I'm much like a merchant ship and my food doesn't come from that far...unless I go to the Russian grocery store that's 2 hours away to get special treats for my kids)

15 She rises also while it is still night (I'm awake right now and it's 1:22 am) And gives food to her household (Everyone else is sleeping!) And portions to her maidens. (Don't have any maidens!)

16 She considers a field and buys it; (I have bought 3 rental properties, but they're quite urban! Do you think those count?) From her earnings she plants a vineyard. (Definitely haven't planted a vineyard! I have a black thumb which goes back to the domestic disaster thing!)

17 She girds herself with strength And makes her arms strong. (I have been running at the gym and doing Zumba, but I should probably add some pushups to make my arms stronger!)

18 She senses that her gain is good; (The only thing I've been gaining lately is weight and I certainly don't think that's good!) Her lamp does not go out at night. (I'm really trying to get better about turning out the lights and not wasting electricity, but it looks like this shortcoming is actually a plus in the quest to be a Proverbs 31 woman!)

19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hands grasp the spindle. (I actually had to look up distaff...it's a tool used in spinning and not the kind of spinning you do at the gym! Another big fat 0 here!)

20 She extends her hand to the poor, And she stretches out her hands to the needy. (I really have a heart for those who are poor and needy and really try to look for ways to give generously to them!)

21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household, (I may not be afraid, but I wish summer would come soon!) For all her household are clothed with scarlet. (I'm trying to envision my husband clothed in scarlet and it's making me giggle...actually picturing my girls and my husband in matching scarlet outfits is even funnier!)

22 She makes coverings for herself; (I once made myself a dress and a skirt, but that was 15 years ago.) Her clothing is fine linen and purple. (No linen for me...it wrinkles way too easily! I'm ok with the purple, but everyone knows black is more slimming!)

23 Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land. (We don't have any gates, but my hubby is pretty well known in our church)

24 She makes linen garments and sells {them,} And supplies belts to the tradesmen. (I haven't made any garments in years, but I sometimes sell stuff on ebay!)

25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, And she smiles at the future. (I'm shooting for strength and dignity, but at this point, I'll settle for something that's clean and that fits!)

26 She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. (OUCH! The only time I open my mouth is to switch feet! I'm really working on this!)

27 She looks well to the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. (Does sitting in front of the computer blogging count as idleness...please say no!!!)

28 Her children rise up and bless her; (They rise up and tease me all the time) Her husband {also,} and he praises her, (I don't know about praising me, but he did say he was glad he married me!)

Well, all in all, I think I have a LONG way to go. Although quite a few of those comments were made tongue in cheek, I really do want to be the woman God has called me to be! What about you?

A little bit of history...

I have to be honest. I aspire to be the Proverbs 31 woman...and I'm falling quite short! I love my husband and children dearly, but I'm not what you'd call a "Domestic Goddess"! Although I come from a family of amazingly domestic women, I am completely lacking that gene. I'm not good at decorating, I'm hopelessly disorganized, and I'm easily distracted (which means that although I'm a good cook, I often get caught up in something, miss the timer going off, and end up with some Cajun dishes, and by cajun, I mean blackened!!!). Despite my shortcomings (or maybe because of them), my life is often like a sitcom! Join me as I tackle some of my shortcomings and embrace the rest of them!
